- As director-two punch Academy ®, Erin Brockovich and Traffic - is an energetic corporate governance statement / criminal harassment with far-reaching consequences for life in these United States. Not as much as the movie plays like a hyper-caffeinated comedy. In the middle is Mark Whitacre (Matt Damon), a biochemist and a junior executive in the agriculture giant Archer Daniels Midland, which in 1992 began to feed the FBI evidence ADM's involvement in price fixing. Mark's motives for doing so evasive and sometimes contradictory, and subject to mutation at any time. Describing him as bipolar would be akin to finding the Marx Brothers bit crazy. His Fed handles, along with the audience, begins to think of him as a hapless goofball. So they and we get blind-sided by the revelation of multiple dimensions of Mark's life on the ADM and the contents of the investigation - and the film - the changes. It will happen again. And again. It's Soderbergh's brilliant strategy to make our fellow travelers on Mark's crazy ride, almost infectious us with a current version works with his.
Props to screenwriter Scott Z. Burns to boil down Kurt Eichenwald's 600-page book The Informant: A True Story without sacrificing context. And Matt Damon, BCF up to 30 pounds and sputtering his manic lines from less than a caterpillar mustache, attest to his virtuosity and his willingness to dig deep into such a dodgy character. On the negative side, despite a small army of comedians in cameo roles, The Informant!
has nothing like the rich field subsidiary characters encountered in Erin Brockovich and Traffic. This lack of realism, which is reinforced by the dominance of prairie dogs-flat Midwestern speech patterns and cadences (most of the movie unreels in Illinois) and Razzmatazz score by veteran Tunisian Smith Marvin Hamlisch sounds like pep-rally music in an industrial film. Soderbergh also photographed the film (under his pseudonym Peter Andrews) and his decision to view everything through a corn porridge filter makes it a big-screen YouTube experience. - Richard T. Just as he exposes his company's multi-national pricing scheme conspiracy to the FBI, imagine Whitacre himself was hailed as a hero of the common man and gave a promotion.
